Frequently Asked Questions (2026 Scoring Rules)

What changes to CRS points take effect on November 3, 2026?
Starting November 3, 2026, IRCC introduces the new Labour Market Integration factor. It awards points for either Canadian work experience (with leverage bonus points for work in eligible high-wage occupations) OR a qualifying job offer in an eligible high-wage occupation, up to a maximum of 140 points (with spouse) or 150 points (without spouse). The two options cannot be combined—the system awards whichever yields the higher score. Other factors including age, education, language, spouse factors, PNP, French bonus, and study credentials remain unchanged.
Do I need an LMIA for job offer CRS points under the 2026 rules?
No. As of November 3, 2026, you no longer need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) for a job offer to qualify for CRS points or program eligibility. However, points (50, 70, or 100) are only awarded if the job offer is in an eligible High-Wage Occupation on IRCC's official 3-tier list. Officers will assess the genuineness of the job offer at the permanent residence application stage.
Will Express Entry invitation rounds pause on November 3, 2026?
Yes. When the new scoring rules take effect on November 3, 2026, IRCC's system will automatically recalculate CRS scores for all existing profiles in the pool. This recalculation may take up to two weeks, during which invitation rounds will be paused. Candidates already in the pool do not need to create a new profile.
What are High-Wage Occupations and how are they classified?
Under Express Entry, an occupation is considered high-wage if its Canadian median wage is at least 1.3 times the average median wage across the entire Canadian workforce, based on Statistics Canada data over the past 3 years. They are grouped into 3 levels: Tier 1 (median wage ≥ 2.0x, awards 70 xp / 100 offer pts), Tier 2 (1.5x to < 2.0x, awards 40 xp / 70 offer pts), and Tier 3 (1.3x to < 1.5x, awards 20 xp / 50 offer pts). High-wage status attaches to the National Occupational Classification (NOC), not an individual's personal wage.
What is a good CRS score for Express Entry?
A 'good' CRS score depends on the current draw cutoffs, which change every round. In recent years, general Express Entry draws have had cutoffs ranging from roughly 430 to 530. A score above 470 is competitive for most rounds, while a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination adds 600 points and virtually guarantees an invitation to apply.
How is the CRS score calculated?
The CRS score is the sum of Core/Human Capital factors (age, education, language proficiency), the Labour Market Integration factor (Canadian work experience and high-wage leverage or job offer), Spouse factors, Skill Transferability (cross-factor combinations such as education plus language ability), and Additional points (provincial nomination, Canadian education credential, French-language bonus, and sibling in Canada). The maximum possible score is 1,200.
How often are Express Entry draws held?
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) typically conducts Express Entry draws every two weeks, although the schedule can vary. Category-based draws targeting specific occupations or French-language proficiency also occur alongside general draws.
What is Express Entry and who is eligible?
Express Entry is Canada’s online immigration application system for skilled workers. It manages three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Eligible candidates create a profile and are ranked by their CRS score. The highest-scoring candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
How can I improve my CRS score?
Key ways to boost your CRS score include: gaining at least 12 months in an eligible high-wage occupation (up to +70 points), securing a high-wage job offer (up to 100 points), maximizing official language scores (CLB 9+ in English or NCLC 7+ in French), obtaining a provincial nomination (+600 points), or adding higher education credentials.
What language tests are accepted for Express Entry?
For English, IRCC accepts IELTS General Training and CELPIP General. For French, TEF Canada and TCF Canada are accepted. Test results must be less than two years old at the time of your Express Entry application. Your scores are converted to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, which are then used to calculate your CRS points.
